Myth vs. Fact in the Lynette Culver Abduction

On May 5, 1975, Bundy would journey to Pocatello, Idaho, to hunt college-aged women, but he would come up empty-handed during his hunt on the first day and evening. The weather played a part in thwarting him as it was cold that May, and snow showers blanketed the city during this time. Convincing women to stop and talk with him, or follow him, just wasn’t going to happen. He was also “chased” out of a woman’s high-rise dormitory on the college campus, and these failures may have caused Bundy to change tactics the next day. Unable to snatch a woman, Bundy would capture a girl, which leads us to this:

When I was conducting research for my book The Bundy Murders, I discovered new and previously unpublished information on the abduction and murder of twelve-year-old Lynette Culver of Pocatello. Not only that, but I learned a great deal about Bundy’s two-day odyssey to that location. Not only was I able to obtain the police case file and the end-of-life confession transcript Bundy gave two days prior to his execution, but I was very fortunate to have the corroboration of Russ Reneau and Randy Everitt of the Idaho Attorney General’s Office. Although I dealt mostly with Russ through telephone conversations and emails, I finally caught up with Randy by phone one night, and I’m very thankful for the information provided by these two men. Having the official record of the Lynette Culver abduction was great, but having the remembrances of these two very capable investigators to go along with it was invaluable.

To give you, the reader, a background on this murder, and how little was known about it (excluding the investigators, of course), I’ll give a brief summary of what was out there in books prior to the publication of The Bundy Murders. Although I will not name any particular Bundy book, I will recount what was already out there as I was conducting my research.

One very popular book has Bundy driving to Pocatello, committing the murder, and returning the same day. Apparently, another popular Bundy book mentions the actual (and accurate) method Bundy used to kill Lynette, but it disappears in later editions. Not one of the books goes into great detail about both the abduction and murder, and most references to the killing of Lynette Culver mention the murder only and that’s all. Early on I determined that I would leave no proverbial stone unturned when searching for the truth, and that I would find all that I could find about each of the murders, and this included the case of Lynette Culver. Of course, I had no idea how different my road would become as I searched for the truth for this particular case, but I soon found out.

When I started writing the book, I covered all the murders sequentially. I didn’t gather all the material sequentially, as I was gathering case files from various states sometimes at the same time. But
